Job Overview

The Pipe Superintendent is a senior-level field leader responsible for the high-level management and strategic oversight of multiple pipe crews and underground utility operations across one or more project sites. This role focuses on long-term planning, resource allocation, and the coordination of sanitary sewer, storm drainage, and water distribution systems.

The Superintendent ensures that all utility installations align with the master project schedule, meet rigorous quality standards, and maintain strict profitability and safety benchmarks.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Oversight & Quality Assurance

  • Manage and optimize the performance of multiple pipe crews, ensuring consistent production across all utility phases.
  • Review and validate utility profiles, shop drawings, and site plans to identify potential design conflicts before construction begins.
  • Establish and enforce rigorous quality control protocols, overseeing large-scale testing (hydrostatic, vacuum, and mandrel testing) and final municipal inspections.
  • Lead the resolution of complex engineering challenges and utility tie-ins, coordinating directly with project engineers and owners.

Safety & Compliance Leadership

  • Serve as the primary authority on OSHA excavation standards, ensuring all foremen and crews maintain 100% compliance with trench safety and shoring requirements.
  • Conduct regular site safety audits and lead “lessons learned” sessions to mitigate risks associated with deep excavations and heavy equipment.
  • Ensure all environmental and erosion control measures (SWPPP) are strictly followed to protect the job site and surrounding community.

Logistics, Planning & Reporting

  • Develop and manage the master utility schedule, coordinating with the General Superintendent to align pipe work with grading and paving phases.
  • Oversee the procurement and delivery of high-volume materials, managing relationships with vendors for pipe, precast structures, and specialty fittings.
  • Monitor project budgets and labor costs, reviewing daily production reports to ensure the project remains profitable.
  • Approve crew timecards and maintain detailed documentation for as-built records, change orders, and daily project milestones.

Qualifications/What We’re Looking For
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in underground utility construction, with at least 3-5 years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Exceptional expertise in the installation of complex utility systems, including deep sewer mains, large-diameter storm systems, and high-pressure water loops.
  • Advanced proficiency in reading and interpreting master site plans, utility profiles, and CAD drawings.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience in cost tracking, production rates, and budget management.
  • Expert knowledge of soil mechanics, trench stabilization, and heavy equipment logistics.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple crews and mentor subordinate Foremen in technical and leadership skills.
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills for interacting with project owners, inspectors, and subcontractors.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening/physical.
  • Valid driver’s license & clean driving record (MVR).
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction and Competent Person certification required.
  • Authorized to work in the US.
