Job Overview
The Heavy Civil Foreman serves as a key on-site leader responsible for the successful execution of heavy civil projects, such as grading, site preparation, and the construction/rehabilitation of sanitary sewer and stormwater systems. This role involves direct supervision over a crew, maintaining high standards of safety/quality control, and ensuring projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Execution & Quality Control
- Oversee and direct daily operations, including excavation, backfilling, trenching, pipe installation, and site leveling for heavy civil grading and underground utility system projects.
- Read, understand, and accurately implement grading plans, blueprints, and specifications.
- Conduct regular inspection/verification checks to ensure all completed work meets necessary project requirements.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve on-site issues/potential problems to keep the project moving forward smoothly.
Crew & Safety Leadership
- Supervise/lead a crew, ensuring crew members are properly trained, held accountable, and provided opportunities to develop/grow.
- Ensure all crew members/subcontractors adhere to OSHA and site-specific safety standards.
- Oversee the proper use and maintenance of grading equipment (bulldozers, graders, excavators, loaders, etc.).
Project Coordination & Reporting
- Coordinate with the Superintendent to schedule, allocate resources efficiently, and ensure tasks are completed on time and within budget.
- Ensure timely delivery, proper handling, and storage of all necessary materials.
- Maintain accurate and timely crew member time sheets, daily logs, and reports.
- Accurately track progress and document any issues or changes.
Qualifications/What We’re Looking For
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in civil grading operations/underground utility (water, storm, sewer) construction.
- Proven success in on-site leadership and crew supervision within a heavy civil environment.
- Strong understanding of grading principles, control systems, and techniques – including cut and fill, compaction, drainage, and site preparation.
- Strong understanding of underground water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater system principles, techniques, and materials.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, grading plans, and specifications.
- Knowledge of heavy equipment operation, including bulldozers, graders, excavators, loaders, and compactors.
- Strong commitment to safety and quality.
- Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening/physical.
- Valid driver’s license & clean driving record (MVR).
- Ability to work out of town as required by project schedules.
- OSHA 30 or other safety trainings/certifications preferred but not required.
- Authorized to work in the US.
